Ecological roles (niche):
It feeds mainly on fruits and seeds, including those from some cultivated species, it keeps in check the growth of plant species while at the same time making sure they are still widespread through the distribution of the plants seeds
Value:
This bird has been trapped mainly for domestic distribution because it is extremely rare and has a high value. Ecologically, this bird’s diet consists of nuts and fruits so sensibly it is a pollinator, distributing seeds and leading to plant biodiversity.
Causes for Extinction or Endangerment:
The primary threat to this species is the continuous deforestation that is happening in the Amazon as it is cleared for farming and ranching. In addition to this is the pressure of trapping that also adds on to the declining rate of the Diademed Amazon.
Consequences of the Loss of the Species:
Since the Diademed Amazon is a pollinator, the loss of this species would lead to less dominance of certain plants in an area unless they adapt to finding new pollinators.
Rate of loss:
The species is predicted to lose 49-55% of its habitat over 37 years starting from 2002. In addition to it's loss of habitat is the susceptibility to trapping, from these factors the species is suspected to decline 50-79% over this time period.
Interesting Facts:
These parrots are extremely loud at sunrise and sunset. This is because they don't receive much attention during these times and want to attract attention to themselves.
